How to choose an energy provider?

Choosing energy provider is a headache whether you are moving to new location or want to consider switching to save money. There are number of nationwide energy companies available with two main types of plans: fixed rate energy plans and variable rate energy plans. Choosing fixed rate or variable rate energy plan is little confusing when you do not know differences between both types of plans. Below are the pros and cons of fixed rate and variable rate plans that will help you decide which one is best for you.

Fixed rate energy plan will give you security to lock one rate for the life of your contract term. You will pay same per kilowatt rate every month until your contract term expires. Your price will not go up or down whether the price of electricity rises or falls. If you go with fixed rate energy plans then you won't have to pay for high rate if electricity prices go up. However if electricity prices go down then you will not have option to switch until your contract expires. You have to pay early termination fees if you want to end your contract before it expires. Most common contract lengths for fixed rate energy plans are 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and 24 months. Also keep in mind that most of energy company will give you fixed rate on average 1000 or 2000 kwh usage. Most of them adds a monthly surcharge of $5-$10 when your average usage is less than 1000 or 2000 kwh which makes the average price shoot up.

With variable rate energy plan your monthly per kilowatt rate will change from month to month. You will not be stuck with one rate for any contract term but you will pay high or low rate based on fluctuations in the market. Unlike fixed rate plans, variable rate plan does not have early termination fees. Variable rate plan can be cheaper than fixed rate plans but you will get surprise bill every month based on energy rate in the market.
